Who We Are
Formed in the Spring of 2025, the Pendragon Foundation is a charity run by a small team of passionate volunteers. We share an enthusiasm for our heritage and want to see our communities flourish. Our members are from across the British Isles and further afield, and we bring our diverse skills and experiences together to achieve a common goal: the rebuilding of Britain’s strongholds. Partnering with local groups and national bodies, we are constructing a coalition of businesses, charities and community organisations to deliver an ambitious programme of restoration and regeneration across the country.
Each of our team members brings energy and expertise to their role. They come from all walks of life, bringing their knowledge and qualities with them into their work for the Pendragon Foundation. From accountants to heritage specialists, content creators and researchers, we empower them to contribute to our vision through fostering an environment of autonomy, responsibility and excellence. Together we are a dynamic team working with cohesion and freedom to deliver our goal: to rebuild Britain’s strongholds.
Chairman: Dr. Nathan Hood
Leading the board of trustees and directing our different projects is Dr Nathan Hood. Since an early age he has had a deep love for Britain’s history and legends, from Roman outposts on Hadrian’s Wall to medieval castles from which knights rescued maidens. Receiving a PhD in Scottish history in 2020 and working as a lecturer, Nathan has written academically on medieval culture and the mythology of JRR Tolkien. He now brings his interests to the cultural and heritage sectors, where he works to deliver a range of artistic programmes in partnership with community organisations and historic environments. Additionally, he has organised in person and digital conferences on a range of topics, including Wagner’s operas and the legends of King Arthur.
Nathan believes that: ‘Castles are a kind of language. They are more than the stones and mortar from which they are made. The stronghold is a statement in architecture, a message. As a meeting point between mythology and history, they elevate us through their strong towers, powerful battlements and majestic keeps. They evoke in us wonder and awe. Letting them fall into ruin is a travesty because doing so cuts us off from structures that stir our imaginations and inspire our hearts. We must restore Britain’s strongholds to reinvigorate our connection with the past, to bolster our present wellbeing, and to place our nation’s heritage at the foundation of our future. In short, the restoration of castles will lead to the regeneration of both ourselves and our communities.’
Teams
The Pendragon Foundation is run by highly competent and talented individuals. They are organised into highly focused specialised teams to maximise their abilities and potential. Their work is brought into a cohesive strategy by a board of trustees. We have five main areas of activity:
Research
Good heritage conservation begins with an excellent understanding of how to maintain and enhance the significance of a historic building in a changing world. Our research team collates and analyses detailed information so that Pendragon can make good decisions based on evidence.
Media
Raising awareness of our projects through digital media and at in real life events, the outreach team use creativity to promote a deeper understanding of castles and their attendant cultures.
Finance
Using their experience and expertise, our finance team oversee our crowdfunding campaigns and our accounts to ensure that our fundraising and investment are transparent and reliable.
Events
We’re committed to organising exciting events that highlight and emphasise Britain’s magnificent heritage. We draw upon our enthusiastic events team to produce and run high quality and memorable experiences in local and national settings.
Engagement
Everything we do is possible because of the many wonderful people who give their time and energy to help us rebuild Britain’s strongholds. Our engagement team empower our volunteers to achieve their ambitions as part of the Pendragon Foundation.
